The answer was simple lets make it at home. We brought a cheap biltong box off the internet which is basically a plastic storage box with plastic rails a lamp fitting for a bulb and a fan.
abattoir..yes I know some people may not like it but at the end of the day the meat is always fresh the day we go and has not been sitting in lorries or shelves of the stores for goodness knows how long.
We normally buy around 3kg which once it is dried will be around 1.5kg or close enough,
It normally costs around £4.50 per KG for the really nice parts.
Once we get it home we cut it in to the size peices that we want and rub it in bilong which we buy online it is around £for 1Kg which really does long a long way because you do not need too much of it.
We normally leave ours over night and hang in the box the next day with the lamp and fan on depending how dry you want it and how bi/thick your cuts are depends how long you leave it for but around 3-5 days.
Works out to be better in the long run to do it ourselves and the kids love getting involved and they are always excited to check on it through the top daily.
